Session: The Ecogothic in Italian Literature and Culture

The fear of disintegrating species boundaries has engendered panicked visions of the human, natural, and animal worlds that manifest themselves vividly in Gothic literature of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Yet, while monster figures and issues of human, nonhuman, and species identity reach historic proportions in the Gothic, critics are just beginning to view the genre from an ecocritical perspective. This panel addresses the Gothic and allegories of monstrosity in Italian literature and culture, especially as they intersect with issues of species identity, food, nature, and consumption. Various critical and theoretical approaches and methodologies, including cross-cultural viewpoints, are welcome.
