I invite you to submit an abstract to be considered for the “Global Feminist Science/Speculative Fictions Advance Social Change” session of the Northeast Modern Language Association’s 2011 convention in New Brunswick, New Jersey, April 7-10, 2011.
Please send 400 word abstracts or papers with abstracts as Word attachments to Deanna Utroske at deannautroske@gmail.com with “feminist sf submission” in the subject line.
The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2010.
This NeMLA session aims to expand the conversation among feminist iterations of science and speculative fictions (broadly defined).
The panelists will discuss various (social, political, cultural, etc.) changes that feminist science and speculative fictions envision; how instances of these fictions test or demonstrate the change they suggest; and what action or activism they call for beyond the test. How might authors, editors and publishers, fans, casual readers, and critics work to manifest the social changes feminist science and speculative fictions portend for a given nation (or globally)? Or in instances where these fictions present dystopias, how might readers respond to prevent the negative future described?
Papers read in this session will allow the presenters and attendees to contrast the methods and goals of these fictions. We will compare the distinct and similar visions that texts within these literatures reveal, across national boundaries; and we will learn from each other to better foster change through these literatures in our global and local spaces.
This conversation, here among scholars, continues in classrooms where feminist practices, transnational literatures, and science and speculative fictions mingle.
The 42nd Annual NeMLA Convention will feature approximately 360 sessions, as well as dynamic speakers and cultural events. Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA session; however panelists can only present one paper (panel or seminar). Convention participants may present a paper at a panel and also present at a creative session or participate in a roundtable. Do not accept a slot if you may cancel to present on another session.
